Sex offender fled home in Flint after threats from neighbour

A CHILD sex offender panicked when neighbours found out about his past and he fled his Flint address, a court heard.

Jamie Gudger had been at large for some months when he failed to register with the police as a sex offender.

Gudger, 29, formerly of Raven Court, Flint, was jailed for 18 weeks at Flintshire Magistrates Court after he admitted failing to register his address with North Wales Police.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, told how Gudger was jailed for two years and eight months in the summer of 2012 following a conviction for sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl.

He was made the subject of a SOPO (sexual offences prevention order) and ordered to register with the police as a sex offender.

Gudger was released from prison on licence in December last year and was due to be recalled, but he had been at large and the probation service and the police did not know where he was.

Mr Espie said that in February of this year he received a warning for failing to notify a change of address.

At that stage he gave his address as Raven Court but police this month received information that he had not lived there since May.

He was arrested on Sunday for failing to comply with the notification requirements but made no comment in interview.

Paul Abraham, defending, said that the original offence was clearly a serious matter when he had entered into a consensual but totally inappropriate relationship with a young girl.

After his release things had been going well.

He secured employment and he had an address. He had been supervised by a probation officer and police officers from the public protection unit.

“Things had been going fine until he realised that someone who lived close by had found out about his past,” said Mr Abraham.

“After being there for some time without any problems he started to have some unwelcome attention.

“It started off with low level abuse in the street – comments, then threats of violence and then the attempted use of violence against him. He panicked and took himself away from the address.”

Since May he had been ‘sofa-surfing’ with friends and relatives, staying two or three days at a time.

But significantly he had not re-offended and he had not been found in any inappropriate places such as playgrounds. He had left his address, his job and everything,” said Mr Abraham.

Gudger had effectively buried his head in the sand hoping it would all go away – but it would not and he now had to face the consequences.

“He has been under pressure and did not do the right thing,” he added.

l In June 2012 Mold Crown Court heard how Gudger took an under-age girl to a forest and had intercourse with her.

Gudger, then 27, admitted a charge of sexual activity with a child. He broke down and cried when he was jailed for two years and eight months.

Gudger then of New Road, Gwespyr, was told by Judge Niclas Parry that the aggravating features were the substantial disparity in age and the fact he was sexually experienced and a father.

“You took advantage of a child who had an obvious crush on you,” the judge told him.
