A HERITAGE park welcomed gentle giants through its gates for a shire horse show.

Greenfield Valley Heritage Park saw a number of huge shire horses ride in for a weekend at an exclusive event demonstrating the power of the biggest breeds.

Visitors were able to see some of the animals in action and get up close to them, watching how to plait manes as well as learning some of the skills needed to manoeuvre them along with their loads.

A lucky few also got the chance to ride the largest equine species in the world including award-winning Ned, BV, Daisy, and Monty, who all stand at an enormous 18 hands high and weigh about 850kg.

Children enjoyed a game of tug of war to decide who is the strongest – the real giants of the horse world or Flintshire’s youngsters.

The horses are no strangers to the spotlight, having starred on TV in the S4C period drama film, Calon Gaeth.

They are are also known to pull the odd celebrity wedding carriage, such as that of Welsh singer and songwriter Cerys Matthews, and the official Royal harpist to the Prince of Wales, Claire Jones.

Greenfield Valley Heritage Park manager Chris Wright said: “We are very privileged to host such an event at Greenfield Valley this year.

“It’s our passion to bring in wonderful animals for people to see and learn about here at the valley.

“It’s a rather special event for us and we are all proud to be part of the day.”
