A MAN left his girlfriend bruised and battered after discovering she had sent a racy text message to his nephew, a court heard.

Paul Sadler, 32, was sentenced to 12-weeks in prison, suspended for two years, for an attack on Katie Oliver in the early hours of June 1.

Sadler, now living with his mother in Gladstone Road, Broughton, had been out drinking when he found out about the text and confronted Miss Oliver at their home in Alderley Place, Blacon, Chester.

West Cheshire Magistrates Court heard he then launched a flurry of punches and kicks at her, leaving her with a black eye and bruises to her face and body.

Sadler initially denied the charges against him, but entered a guilty plea on the day his trial was due to begin.

Stephen Ferns, defending, told the court there had been strong provocation as Miss Oliver had allegedly been seeing both Sadler's nephew and best friend behind his back.

He said: “Sadler has no recollection of the incident at all and is in disbelief at what is alleged against him.

“The victim accepts she had sent a sexual text message to Sadler's nephew and this was seen. Not only had she had relations with the nephew, but also with his best friend.

“This has been very difficult for him. This has cost him his partner and lost the support network of a close friend.”

It emerged Sadler, who was said to have battled alcohol addiction, had been handed a community order a year ago after he attacked Miss Oliver on a previous occasion.

The court heard he had previous convictions, four of which relate to violent offences, including assault and battery.

Sadler was also ordered to pay £300 in costs, an £80 victim surcharge and £100 compensation to Miss Oliver for the injuries she sustained.

He was told to attend a domestic violence programme and a restraining order was granted, banning him from making contact with Miss Oliver for two years.

Sadler told magistrates: “Why would I want to [contact her]? I never want to see her again.”
