THOUSANDS of children descended on Wrexham as the town centre was transformed into a haven of play.

The annual Wrexham Play Day event, organised by Wrexham Council, took place yesterday and attracted record numbers in this its 10th year and the seventh year the event has been run on Llwyn Isaf and Queen’s Square.

Families brought along their youngsters who were treated to an afternoon of fun in the the warm summer weather.

The sandpit and maze were popular as ever, with waterslides and even water fights on offer for all the children.

The Land play facility in Plas Madoc set up a pop-up junk playground for the children, as well as an early years area, a bike course and science experiments provided by Techniquest Glyndwr.

The event used to be run at Bellevue Park before migrating to Llwyn Isaf fields in 2007.

Mike Barclay, event organiser, who has been with the council for seven years, said: “The popularity if the event keeps on growing each year, we had over 3,000 children here in 2013, and with the warm weather , we look set to beat that today.

“The day is aimed at encouraging people that responsible play is a key part of our community.

“This is now a day for Wrexham, belonging to the people of Wrexham.

“We are promoting the right to play, while demonstrating that, for children, play is a way they can learn and interact with one another in a way which they wouldn’t develop otherwise.

“It shouldn’t be forgotten that their is a range of brilliant play areas for children in the county, including The Land Adventure Playground, the Venture, and Gwenfro Valley in Caia Park.”
