THREE fundraising cyclists are celebrating their achievement after being inspired by a young girl’s battle with diabetes.

They took to the saddle in aid of Diabetes UK having each been touched by the bravery of three-year-old Ellie May Hodges who has to have daily injections in her battle with type one diabetes.

Ben Swift, Bethan Humphries and Zara Williams all cycled from Rhyl to Chester Racecourse for the cause and Ellie May’s mother said she has been overwhelmed by people’s support following the latest fundraising event inspired by her daughter.

They were absolutely amazing,” Georgina Hodges said of the cyclists.

“I am so overwhelmed by the support and generosity from people.”

Friend of the family Ben undertook the 31-mile ride along with Bethan and Zara, who have helped Ellie May deal with her condition while attending nursery.

They completed the ride in about two hours and 40 minutes.

“Everybody seems to have made it their goal to help, which is fantastic,” Mrs Hodges added.

Ellie May, from Lloc, near Holywell, was diagnosed with type one diabetes last year and now has to cope with having numerous injections each day in order to control her blood sugar levels.

Swimmers at Holywell Swimming Club took on a three-mile swim at the town’s leisure centre where Ellie May has also been learning to get to grips with the water.

And those efforts, combined with that of the cycle ride, have already raised more than £1,200 for Diabetes UK, with money still coming in.

The Hodges family are now looking forward to a funday on August 23 at the Druid Inn which will see Gorsedd Road closed to accommodate the afternoon's activities, including pony rides, stalls, a bouncy castle and bingo games.

Mrs Hodges added: “Hopefully, we will raise more for such a good cause, but we also want to hold a funday to thank people for their support and give something back."
