THE taxpayer could be lumbered with a “horrendous” bill after a dire mess was left behind at a makeshift traveller camp.

Travellers arrived in 16 caravans on the Mold Business Park at Maes Gwern two weeks ago.

But after they left on Monday night the area was left strewn with rubbish and debris.
Large amounts of waste, furniture, tiles and even a bathroom suite were left on the land the travellers had occupied.

Flintshire and Mold councillor Haydn Bateman said the travellers had “disrespected the community”.

“It is an absolute disgrace,” Cllr Bateman said. “It is the worst example of rubbish being left by travellers I have seen.

“Current legislation means the community is left at the mercy of these people once they move in.”

Cllr Bateman said noise coming from the camp had been a problem.

He said a date to enforce the travellers’ eviction had been set, but the group moved off before action could take place.

One of the travellers stopped at Maes Gwern, Josh Fiddler, 46, spoke to the Leader over a suggested lack of available permanent pitches for the Traveller community in Flintshire.

But Cllr Bateman said: “When something like this happens you can’t have sympathy for them.

“Flintshire Council provided portable toilets for the travellers and they were encouraged to keep the place tidy.

“This will now come at an horrendous cost for the council to clean up after them.”

One Mold resident, West Coast Energy development engineer Andrew Cowley, who walks past the site to and from his place of work, which backs on the land that had been occupied.

The 37-year-old said: “What they have done here is disgusting.”

Flintshire Council is now faced with clearing up the mess at the site, which has become a “favourite” for travellers coming to the area with numerous camps set up there in recent years.

And that it a prime example of why people don't like 'travellers'. It's not racism or nimby's, it's this every time they set up camp and leave. Can someone find out how much we spend per head of traveller? As I remember some big numbers being mentioned in the paper for refurbishment of traveller sites.

In the picture there's a sofa and in the article it mentions a bathroom suite being left there ... either they're living in pretty big caravans or they're fly tipping the rubbish they've been getting paid for 'removing'.

I believe the council do search the rubbish for any evidence of where fly tipping came from, not just the traveller rubbish. But even if you paid anyone to collect rubbish and its found dumped, and its traced back to you, you will be fined.

You will always get the do gooders who say "they are human, they have rights". They are a disgrace to mankind. As mentioned , it is probably rubbish that they have been paid to move or items they have stolen. YUK

Once again its the good old taxpayer who pays out and not these so called 'travellers' who seem to still get away with everything because everybody is against them and they are a minority well tough get in the real world these people should be pursued and made to pay for the damage and mess that they always leave behind. I have no sympathy for them.
