A MAN has died after falling from a busy road bridge.

The shocking incident happened at the high A483 bridge near Halton, Chirk.

Police said the man was pronounced dead below the bridge.

The road at the bridge, which crosses the River Dee between Halton and Pentre, was closed for almost two hours after the fall at 11.15am yesterday.

It was shut between the junctions for the A539 at Ruabon and the A5 for Chirk.

It is the second death at the bridge in just over seven months. The body of Sarah Maria Jones, 48, of Glentworth Avenue, Oswestry, was found under the same bridge on December 30.

After yesterday’s fall, the A483 was reopened shortly before 1pm.

A police spokesman said: “North Wales Police received a call at 11.15am today that a man had fallen from a bridge on the A483 near Chirk.

At about 2.30pm NWP Inspector Andy Jones said: “I can confirm that the man who fell from the bridge on the A483 at Pentre near Chirk this morning was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and the coroner will be informed.”

Motorists were forced off the A483 and diverted onto the B5605 through Rhosymedre, with others choosing to loop around the roundabout and head east towards Overton in a bid to miss the gridlocked traffic.

Geoff Roberts, of Oswestry, said: “It’s a bit of a nightmare with the lorries and other traffic trying to get through to the Halton junction, but in fairness the police and paramedics have got a job to do.”

A taxi driver who was travelling from Wrexham through to Chirk at the time said: “I’m hearing it’s going to take over an hour to get from Ruabon to Chirk.”
