A TEAM of veteran footballers will take on a community football club in a charity match this weekend.

Former professional players including Lee Sharpe and Alan Kennedy and ex-Wrexham forward Dele Adebola are due to face Penycae FC at Afoneitha Road in a fundraising match for Children in Need.

The match will kick-off at Afoneitha Road at 10am on Sunday.

The game will form the Welsh leg of the All Star Charity XI, which will see a team of seasoned footballers take on five different teams throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

The aim of the event is to raise more than £20,000 for Children in Need by playing five games across five nations within 48 hours, with the intent of setting a record.

The professionals will start off in Scotland on Friday, before starting at Northern Ireland on Saturday morning.

On Saturday evening, they will face an Irish team led by Boyzone and Coronation Street star Keith Duffy, before catching the ferry to Wales and arriving in Penycae for Sunday morning.

They will then head to Nantwich for the final game at 2.30pm.

Barry Donnegan, organiser of the All Star Charity XI, said: “A friend of mine used to play for Penycae, and we’d heard about what a nice ground it was.

“We were looking for a club that wasn’t far away from Nantwich, though they’re going to be quite tired by then.”

Eleri Pemberton, manager of the Penycae Memorial Hall and Football Club, said the fact the club had managed to attract such big-name stars was testament to the efforts of its volunteers.

She said: “They’ve worked hard for it. Some of the volunteers we’ve got at the club work from 6am until midnight. If it wasn’t for them, the club would be nothing.

“And this game will help us raise some awareness of the club – some people don’t even know we’re there.”

The full-line-up of former players is:
Ian Clarkson (played for Stoke City);
Joe Cornforth (Sunderland);
Daryl Burgess (West Bromwich Albion);
John Cornforth (Sunderland);
Dele Adebola (Wrexham);
Lee Sharpe (Manchester United);
Phil Naisbitt (Sunderland);
Gary Bennett (Sunderland);
Alan Kennedy (Liverpool and Wrexham);
Dave Regis (Stoke City);
Marco Gabbiadini (Sunderland).
