MORE than £1,000 worth of wedding stock and money has been stolen in an overnight raid on a shop.

The wedding decorations and £150 in cash were taken from the Sugar and Spice store on Brunswick Road, Buckley between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Store owner Ann Gray said the stock taken was worth more than £1,200.

She said: “It’s still traumatic now, it doesn’t just end with that night.

“We couldn’t open on Monday while the police were in and we’ve had no sleep for two days.

“My main concern was we were preparing for a wedding on Sunday and we didn’t want to let the bride down.”

Mrs Gray said that she discovered the burglary when she went to the store to pick up items for a wedding on Sunday.

“I came in at about 9am to collect some items from the back and it was then I noticed a tray of buttonholes was missing,” she said.

“That’s when I started looking around and when I went into the shop I found it in a mess.

“I saw the till had been forced open and that was that.”

Mrs Gray has run the shop with her husband Darren since March, 2013.

Mr Gray said the thieves had also taken five centrepiece ornaments with mirror stands and a further five candelabras.

Boxes of sweets and lollipops had also been taken, along with 10 small cardboard favour boxes and two till floats containing £150.

It was discovered the burglars had broken into the shop via the back door and used a crowbar to force a lock.

Mrs Gray said she had had great support from nearby retailers, including Stems Florist, whose staff allowed her to put flowers together at the last minute for the Sunday engagement.

“You can’t stand still though, you can’t let these thieves beat you,” she added.

Mr Gray said: “It was as if the thieves had gone shopping for themselves really. Like they were in Asda with their shopping bag.

“I’m just glad they didn’t trash the shop. It could have been a lot worse.”

PC Sally Mulvaney said: “I am appealing for anyone with information about this incident to call the police on 101, quoting crime reference number RC14115693.”
