A LIBRARY brought back to life by volunteering villagers has been vandalised.
In February more than 8,000 books donated by big-hearted community members helped re-stock and breathe new life into Bagillt Community Library.
Efforts to see the library revived took three years and included the formation of the Save Bagillt Library Group which succeeded in refurbishing the Pentre building on Sandy Lane.
But vandals have now undermined the community’s success when they damaged windows after hurling rocks at the building in what has been labelled a “mindless” act.
Bagillt community councillor Mike Reece said: “It’s a bitter blow after all the hard work that has been put in.
“People are bitterly disappointed and it is downheartening.
“The community is grateful that there is a library here again because it was a great loss to the village when it was shut previously.
“Unfortunately there is a minority that don't feel that way.
“It is a mindless act.”
Cllr Reece said there have also been instances of youngsters climbing on the library roof and added: “We don't want anyone to fall off and hurt themselves. It is a dangerous thing to do.”
A 5ft by 3ft window was smashed by vandals between 6pm on Friday and 10am on saturday morning.
Another window was also cracked as a result of the incident.
Community councillor Brian Doleman, who is also a member of Save Bagillt Library Group, said a replacement made of reinforced glass will cost upwards of £100.
“We are low on funds as it is so this could be a big struggle,” he said.
“We might even have to think about boarding them up and painting them.
“Members of the community have helped breathe new life into the library and the building itself and this is how they have been repaid.
“I’d like to see justice done and those responsible be made to pay compensation.”
A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “Between 6pm on July 25 and 10am on July 26, a rear library window was smashed with a stone.”
Anyone with information about this offence should call police on 101, quoting incident reference number RC14114948.
