A DOG show, donkey rides and inflatable jousting were among the entertainment on offer at a community carnival.

A sunny Bellevue Park played host to Offa Carnival as hundreds of people came out to enjoy the day.

Cambria Marching Band played and there was a summer football school put on by Brickfield Rangers FC which was open to all.

The dog show was held in aid of People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), with entry costing £1 and judging was done by Greyhound Rescue Wales along with Rhyd Broughton Veterinary Centre staff.

Refreshments were available in the nearby Parciau Community Centre, on Bellevue Road.

The family-friendly event, which ran from 11am on Saturday, included community and craft stalls, while there was also a Punch and Judy show.

But while the weather was good for the majority of the carnival, things took an unexpected turn for the worse as heavy rain hit Wrexham just before 3pm.

Cllr Phil Wynne, who represents Brynyffynnon for Wrexham Council and sits on Offa Community Council, said it was a “cracking” day.

He added: “We normally run it at the start of July but we decided to put it back because of all the other events going on.

“We were really fortunate with the weather, apart from the downpour at the end.

“I was put in charge of the donkey rides for a couple of hours. If I never see another donkey again, it will be too soon!

“The whole day really showed the park off to people who don’t usually use it. We had a music festival the night before and people said it was the best attended they have seen.

“The dog show was really well attended.

“A big thanks to clerk, Karen Benfield, who spent a year organising the event and making sure everything ran smoothly.

“These events really bring the community together.”
