Removing trolley locks leads to incidents of dumping

A COMMUNITY leader has expressed his disappointment that supermarket trolleys are being dumped across a town.

Less than two weeks after warning the removal of locks from trolleys at the Morrisons supermarket in Connah’s Quay could lead to them being abandoned, town and county councillor Andy Dunbobbin said his comments hadn’t been acknowledged as he discovered trolleys left across the town.

On July 16, Cllr Dunbobbin said he was “dismayed” by Morrisons’ decision to remove locks from their shopping trolleys as he feared it could lead to them being an unsightly presence in the town.

He says he’s now spotted trolleys left in Upper Bryn Road and Highvale in the Golftyn ward.

“The warning hasn’t been acknowledged as well as I’d hoped,” Cllr Dunbobbin said.

“It’s frustrating. Even at the car park, the trolleys are being dumped and left in disabled spaces.”

Trolley locks, that required shoppers to put a pound coin in to a slot to access the trolley and get the deposit back when it is returned to the rank, were removed from 150,000 trolleys at Morrisons stores nationwide earlier this month.

Cllr Dunbobbin added the discarded trolleys could prove to be a safety risk.

“I just want a nice environment for everyone. The kids are off school now and they might think these trolleys are fun to play in. Somebody could get hurt.

“They just look unsightly scattered around.

“It’s not good for keeping the area tidy.”

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “We trust our customers and are removing trolley locks to make shopping easier.

“However, two trolleys have been walked off our site in the last two weeks. They have been collected.

“We have patrols to recover trolleys. If people find a trolley, please contact our store to let them know.”

Cllr Dunbobbin said: “I’m disappointed that my concerns have been realised – given I’d already given them prior warning.”
