A FOOTBALL team pitted their wits against a celebrity XI to help raise thousands of pounds for a town’s club.

Celebrities including former Coronation Street stars Bruce Jones, who played Les Battersby, and Steven Arnold, who played Ashley Peacock, were among the stars who were at Flint Town United’s ground to raise funds for the club’s development.

As well as the celebrity XI, playing as Della Bennett’s All-Stars, plenty more were in attendance on the sidelines.

Among them was Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star Will Mellor.

Former boxer Shea Neary was among the line up for the visitors, as well as Wrexham FC legend Mickey Thomas.

But it didn’t stop them falling to defeat, with Flint Town United coming away 4-1 victors.

Hundreds of guests who turned out at the event were also able to enjoy several music performances, a childrens’ football tournament and a range of stalls.

Della Bennet, 30, who organised the event, said she was delighted with the turnout.

She said: “We probably sold about 700 tickets before the weekend so it was a big event.

“We will be making a donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital but the majority will go to Flint football club so that it will be eligible to make the criteria for the Welsh Premier.

“This is going to help massively towards that - I would say half of the money that they need will come from this Sunday.”

With the help of brother-in-law Joe Egan, the Irish heavyweight boxing legend, Mrs Bennett  attracted many stars to the event.

Mrs Bennett, from Buckley, chose to organise the fundraising event after her son Alfie joined the under-si x side.

She said: “The club being able to take the next step will help the younger kids’ development as well so that’s what it is all about.

“I will probably do something else again in the future.

“It would be great to make it an annual event.

“The community has been fantastic while I have been trying to organise this.”

The fundraiser, which took place yesterday, included performances from Flint Male Voice Choir, who sang the Welsh National Anthem.
