A CAR and three house windows were damaged in a linked attack on Wednesday night, believed to have been caused by youths throwing stones.

Chris Wright’s Jeep Cherokee had a window shattered in the incident, which he believed was of such force it must have been fired from an air gun.

But North Wales Police (NWP) officers moved to allay fears air guns had been used, saying their investigations suggest stones thrown by a group of youths caused the damage.

Mr Wright, 32, from the Wrexham area, was taking a friend home when travelling along Gatewen Road, New Broughton, at about 10.15pm.

He said: “We were going past the school so I was only doing 20mph and suddenly we heard a loud bang and the glass just shattered.

“Thankfully, there is a protective layer on the windows so it held it together – otherwise we’d have been covered in glass.

“I’ve thought about it and if it was stones, they must have been thrown with true force.

“The impact really felt like it was a pellet fired from an air gun.

“The passenger was very shook up. The radius of the break points towards it being a pellet.

“Either way, pellet or stone, it is very dangerous for kids to be going round doing this to vehicles. It will end up in a nasty incident.

“Thankfully no one was harmed but it could have been worse.

“As for the youths, they just have nothing else to do, which is sad.”

A woman whose home looks out on to Gatewen Road in New Broughton, said: “I was at in a neighbour’s house and all of a sudden we heard a loud bang from outside.

“We had a look round to see what the cause was but couldn’t find anything.”

A NWP spokesman said officers investigating the damaged car and house windows in the New Broughton, Tan y Fron and Coedpoeth areas about 10pm last night were seeking witnesses.

Insp Andy Jones, from the Wrexham rural policing team, said: “One car and three house windows were damaged and enquiries so far indicate they are linked as youths were seen throwing stones.

“There is no evidence to suggest an air gun was used.

“Extra patrols will be carried out in the areas over coming days to seek witnesses and reassure the local community.”
