A TOWN’S community leaders feel they are being “held hostage” over tourist information points (TIPs).

Mold Council is keen to set up TIPs across the town to highlight the assets in the area and to help visitors make the most of trips to the town and to get around.

The council was awarded a grant of just under £40,000 through Flintshire Council’s rural development plan to set up eight TIPs and submitted a design proposal to the authority for approval.

Earlier this month, the proposal was rejected by county council officials, despite the same designs being in place in Chester, Liverpool and Stratford and a meeting has been arranged for Tuesday for the councils to thrash out a compromise over the designs.

Time is runing out as the grant money must be spent by September.

During a meeting of the town council, it became clear members were not happy abaout the initial design rejection and are keen to see the designs approved.

Cllr Andrea Mearns said: “We are being held hostage because we have got to get the grant spent.

“It’s ludicrous. Are we saying we are a more important conservation area than Liverpool, Stratford or Chester?”

Cllr Geoff Collett said: “We should push for the designs we want and not be browbeaten by one person at Flintshire Council.

“These signs will last many years and we have to be sure they are the right ones.”

Speaking after the meeting, Mold town centre manager Dave Hill said the TIPs would contain a new town map as well as highlighting the town’s top locations

He said TIPs were proposed as Mold relies heavily on visitor numbers and concerns had been raised about people getting around the town and knowing where to find the town’s best locations.
