A PENSIONER left heartbroken after thieves destroyed her mobility scooter and torched her wheelchair is overwhelmed by the community support.

Less than a week since the mindless attack on Shirley Higgins’ Connah’s Quay home, concerned residents have been in touch offering to donate a mobility scooter, and to make cash donations.

The 81-year-old, who has been left “frightened” since her shed on Green Park was raided, said the support has been marvellous.

Mrs Higgins’ scooter and wheelchair were found last Tuesday on the nearby Glan-y-Morfa Court.

The controls of the electric scooter had been smashed and the back panel of the wheelchair had been set on fire.

She described the scooter as being her “lifeline”, providing “vital mobility”, as she can only walk a short distance with the use of sticks.

“I have had my scooter repaired now,” she said.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support – how marvellous. I didn’t think people would be like that.

“It’s marvellous, it really is.”

Mrs Higgins and her husband, George, 82, were informed by a neighbour their shed door was open last Tuesday morning.

When Mr Higgins went out to inspect the scene, he found his wife’s scooter had been taken and her regular wheelchair set on fire.

The couple have had to pay out £80 to get the scooter repaired.

Mrs Higgins has said she will not be leaving the equipment in the shed again and says she plans to step up the security on the home.

“I’m much happier now I have had the scooter repaired,” she added.

“It wasn’t until Sunday before I had a good night’s sleep.”

Despite having her mobility scooter back up and running, Mrs Higgins still needs to replace her wheelchair.

Crime scene investigation officers attended the scene following the attack.

No arrests had been made yesterday and police are continuing to appeal for information.
