Wife denies lying about rape to be free for affair

A HUSBAND slashed his wife's hand with a knife “by accident” after confronting her in the street over an affair, a court heard.

The father-of-two, who had snatched the blade from a kebab shop in Boughton, Chester, claims she had grabbed his wrist and was cut unintentionally as he tried to break away from her.

The defendant had stopped his car in front of his wife’s vehicle at about 9.30pm on September 3 last year after she had been out for a drink in the city with a work colleague.

She said he had followed her from their home in Wrexham – but his lawyer maintains he spotted her on an “off chance” in Chester.

Questioning the woman on day three of the man’s trial at Chester Crown Court yesterday, defence barrister Harbinder Lally told her: “It was an accident. He was not aiming the knife at you, he was trying to get you to release his wrist. You knew he would not harm you. You knew it was safe to approach him with a knife in his hand.”

But the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said her husband intended to stab her, claiming she put herself in harm’s way to protect her companion.

“He told me ‘you’re going to pay for this’,” she told jurors.

“I knew what he was capable of,” she said, adding she would have preferred him to kill her than kill her companion.

The defendant, who cannot be named without identifying his wife, faces 11 charges that include wounding with intent, inflicting GBH and six counts of rape.

He denies the charges but admits possessing a knife in a public place.

Cross-examining, Mr Lally also suggested the woman had lied about an incident a year before when, on August 31, she claims her husband kicked and jumped on her head in their home after she had accused him of having an affair.

She underwent surgery to have two titanium plates fitted to her jaw, which was broken in two places, and could not eat solid food for two weeks.

“I suggest you tripped and fell down the stairs,” Mr Lally told her.

He also suggested the “strong and domineering” woman had made up rape allegations in order to get him out of her life and pursue a relationship with a work colleague.

He said if she had been attacked or forced to have sex against her will, she would have told either her father or a police officer friend.

“You weren’t scared of him or afraid of him,” Mr Lally said.

“If there was any truth in it, you would have told your dad.”

He also questioned why she had only raised the issue of rape with police in October last year, a full month after she was initially interviewed in relation to the Boughton street incident.

“At the time of you having sexual intercourse with the defendant. It was consensual.

“It was only afterwards that it felt dirty because you were in a sexual relationship with the work colleague,” he said.

Giving evidence from behind a screen, the woman said she had not wanted to upset her father and had not mentioned the rapes until she was asked to give a full picture of her home life by police.

The trial continues.
