MOCK BB guns are being handed out as prizes at summer fetes and fairs in Flintshire to children as young as 13.

Flintshire Council trading standards staff are warning the guns, which come supplied with 6mm bullets, could cause serious injury.

Although the items are marked ‘AGE: 18 &UP’, children who win a fete game have been able to select a gun as a prize.

The council said if the guns were used indiscriminately they could cause serious injury.

The council is now contacting amusement centre organisers with a view to ensuring they are aware of the dangers of supplying these items in the wake of a complaint made by a member of the public.

Flintshire Council cabinet member for public protection, Cllr Kevin Jones, said: “I share the same concerns as Flintshire Council trading standards officers.

“It is crass stupidity for such items to be presented to youngsters at these fetes. I would expect all people involved in these fetes to be more aware of their responsibilities.

“Prizes like this are totally inappropriate for youngsters who may not have the knowledge of how to use them in a safe manner.

“I would urge parents to return them or approach the police.

“The potential consequences can be extremely serious, even lethal.”

The use of BB guns has been a scourge for police in the county for some time.

Last August police warned of potential tragedy after the windows of houses, cars and businesses in Flint were shot at by people using a BB gun.

And officers said they were lucky not to be investigating the death of a 16-year-old girl after she was shot with a gun pellet while walking her dog in Wepre Park, Connah’s Quay in March.

A Flintshire trading standards spokesman said: “The supply of these replica guns may constitute offences under consumer protection and firearms legislation.”

Officers have advised parents to supervise children at events to ensure replica BB guns are not given to anyone under the age of 18.
