A MAN who led Wrexham Council two years ago had died.

Tributes have been paid to Ron Davies, who was county councillor for the Little Acton ward between 1987 to 2012 and was leader of the council between 2011 and 2012.

Cllr Davies died on Tuesday night at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital after a short illness. He was 76.

He replaced fellow Liberal Democrat Aled Roberts as leader of Wrexham Council, before losing his seat in the 2012 local elections to Independent candidate William Baldwin.

As a result, Mr Davies was replaced as leader of the council by the current incumbent, Labour Cllr Neil Rogers.

At the time of his death Cllr Davies was chairman of Acton Community Council, a position he had held on previous occasions.

Mr Davies, originally from Caego, was widowed when his wife Hilda died four years ago.

Together they were Mayor and Mayoress of Wrexham in 1999-2000.

Among his many achievements was his role in bringing about the new Acton Resource Centre.

Mr Davies, of Burton Drive, was a keen Liverpool FC supporter and was described by Cllr Carole O’Toole as a “proud Wrexham man”.

She said: “He has devoted a lot of his life to the Liberal Democrats and was an extremely dedicated councillor, who only ever wanted the best for the people of Little Acton.

“Cllr Davies devoted huge amounts of his time looking after his own members.

“He worked diligently for the people of Wrexham and was a proud Wrexham man, proud of his roots and where he came from.

“He was very personable and made a difference to the lives of a lot of people.”

Acton councillor Geoff Lowe paid tribute on behalf of Acton Community Council.

He said: “Ron was a great man and his wealth of experience will be sadly missed by all of us at the community council.

“He represented the people of Little Acton with the utmost diligence and worked hard for all the other areas covered in Acton.

“He spent a huge part of his life helping the people of Acton and Wrexham and, politics aside, he was always a fantastic servant to the area.”

Cllr Neil Rogers said: “Ron was a long-standing councillor, who gave outstanding service to the Little Acton ward – as well as the wider Wrexham community – for many years.

“We are very saddened to hear of his death and on behalf of all members, officers and staff, I’d like to pass on our condolences to Ron’s family.”

North Wales AM Mr Roberts said: “I was saddened to hear the news about Ron, who was a close colleague over many years on Wrexham Council and a political mentor for me in the Liberal Democrats.

“Those of all political persuasions on the council respected Ron’s views and his experience.

“He was a passionate advocate for Little Acton, which he represented over many years.

“Both Ron and his late wife, Hilda, were forthright characters and benefited from the support of their close family and our thoughts go out to Jane, Katherine, Phillip and their families at this time.”
