A MAN described as “the nicest guy you could meet” suffered shocking injuries in a violent street attack a short distance from his home.

Charlie Williams, the former chairman of Mold Ex-Servicemen’s Club, was beaten up after an evening at the town’s Wetherspoon’s pub.

He has been left with horrific injuries to his face and police have described the vicious attack as “brutal and cowardly”.

More than 220 people have taken to Facebook to express their anger at those responsible.

Mr Williams was set upon just a short distance from the Wrexham Street pub as he was returning home.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesman said: “We were called to an incident on Wrexham Street at around 11pm.

“A man in his 50s had been assaulted and he received medical attention.”

A statement released by the Ex-Servicemen’s Club on its Facebook page praised Mr Williams for the time he had devoted to the organisation.

The club described him as “a person who would help anyone out if they were stuck and who has given a lot of his free time to the club in the past”.

“The coward who did this should be driven out of Mold. We don’t need people who do this in Mold.”

Outraged Facebook users took to the site to condemn the attack, describing it as “disgraceful”, “sick”, “evil”, “disgusting” and “dreadful” while wishing Mr Williams a speedy recovery.

Rhian Howells wrote: “Get better soon, Charlie – nicest guy you could meet. How anyone could do this is beyond me. It’s sick.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We responded with a rapid response vehicle and an emergency ambulance. A male in his 50s was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

Anyone with information is asked to call North Wales Police on 101 quoting crime reference number R105990. Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
