HOPES are high that Brymbo is on the road to economic prosperity after a civil engineering project was given the green light.

The £2 million Brymbo link road on the former steelworks site received the go-ahead after a planning agreement between Brymbo Developments and Wrexham Council was signed on Friday.

A spokesman for Brymbo Developments said he hoped work would be able to start towards the beginning of next month.

“It should make a big difference to the area, linking Brymbo with Tanyfron,” the spokesman said. “It is anticipated work will start in early August.”

The agreement between Brymbo Developments and Wrexham Council has been welcomed by community leaders who say it is an important milestone.

Susan Elan Jones, MP for Clwyd South, said: "This is very good news for Brymbo and for our whole area.

“Local people have been waiting a long time for this connection, which will bring surrounding communities together.

“Wrexham Council is to be highly commended for doing the work which has turned this proposal into a reality.”

Ken Skates, Assembly Member for Clwyd South, said: “The news that this ambitious scheme is one step closer is great news for the people of Brymbo.

“I am pleased that the Welsh Government continues to back it after awarding more than £40,000 to the volunteer-run heritage group to fund emergency work to save run-down buildings at the old steelworks site.

“The long-awaited creation of the spine road is key to the wider regeneration plans for the area, and it’s great to see them taking shape.

“I will continue to work with the group to explore all possible funding options, as I have long felt their vision will bring real economic benefits to the area.”

Cllr Paul Rogers, who represents Brymbo ward on Wrexham Council said he was pleased it was finally going ahead after many years of delay.

“The news that the Brymbo link road has been given the go-ahead is great for the community.

“There is a legal agreement the road must be completed within 12 months and if it isn’t there is a bond in place for the council to finish the job.

“This road is key to regenerating the former steelworks site and creating local jobs.

“It’s been a long time coming, however I hope residents will look to the future and the positive impact this road will have for the former steelworks and wider community.”

l IN SEPTEMBER last year the Leader reported Wrexham Council’s planning committee had approved outline plans for a small supermarket and dozens of new homes opposite Bryn Gwenfro, Tanyfron.

The plans were linked to funding being provided by applicant Brymbo Developments for the spine road to connect Brymbo and Tanyfron.
