Anxious wait for Plas Madoc centre rescue bid

AN ACTION group faces an anxious wait to see if can take over Plas Madoc Leisure Centre.

The Splash Community Trust met Wrexham Council officials on Friday to present its business plan for running the facility.

It will be analysed by council officers over the next fortnight, which the trust says will be a “critical period”.

Wrexham Council will then decide whether the business case is viable and advise of any alterations it feels are needed.

Trust chairman Darrell Wright said a “major obstacle” was the refusal of the council to extend by a month the period for the trust to have the takeover plan ready.

The local authority will press ahead with demolishing the centre, currently ‘mothballed’, on October 1 if the trust is not in a position to take over by then.

Plas Madoc Leisure Centre was closed on April 27, ending 40 years of existence in the community.

At a public meeting on Saturday morning at Air Products, Flexys, the trust’s committee took the public through the business plan and answered any questions people had.

Mr Wright said: “We are not a million miles away and we are confident in our plan.

“The council and the author of the plan are now in discussion and we will welcome feedback on how it can be improved or altered. These next two weeks are critical.

“We are confident in our figures that in the first full financial year we can either break even or run at a very small loss.

“We were hoping for a bit of leeway, maybe a month, on the demolition date.

“The council have made it clear we must be a fully reputable leisure trust by the time we take over.

“We can’t just be a ‘fly-by night’ entity and we recognise that.

“We think we can take over by October 1, but an extra month would help no end with job advertisements and getting the centre spick and span for the opening.

“The refusal of the council to alter the date of demolition it a major obstacle, but it is by no means something we can’t work around.”
