Wrexham man back at work and counting his blessings

A MAN who was horrifically injured after being impaled on railings is back at work.

Marlon Poole, of Little Acton, Wrexham, has returned to work at Tata Steel on Deeside, despite losing the sight in one of his eyes after the horrendous incident.

In February a railing spike pierced through Mr Poole’s throat and face and went into his skull after he fell at Gwersyllt train station.

Firefighters had to use cutting equipment to free him from the fencing spike.

Mr Poole was left in a critical condition and was rushed to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, where doctors fought to save him.

But just months later, Mr Poole – who turned 39 this week – has returned to work three days a week at the Shotton plant, where he is a dispatch chargehand.

Speaking to the Leader about his remarkable recovery, he said after surviving the life-threatening accident he regards every day as a blessing and is so grateful to everyone who has helped him come through the ordeal.

Such has been the speed of his recovery, he has just come back from a holiday to Spain with 20 friends.

“I am in a very good place at the moment and there aren’t the words to say how much I would like to thank everyone who has helped me,” said Mr Poole. “I am certainly looking forward to the future. For me each day is a blessing. The accident has changed my outlook on life I am a lot more positive now.”

Mr Poole has been back at work for a few weeks and is enjoying being with his colleagues again.

“I was apprehensive about the first day back,” he said. “That was quite emotional and a bit like starting school all over again. But everyone has been very welcoming and I’m glad to be working again.”

Mr Poole’s break in Spain was spent at the resort of Benalmadena.

It was a stag weekend for one of Mr Poole’s boyhood friends, Neil Sutcliffe – nicknamed Sutty – from Gwersyllt.

“We had a fantastic time. I would like to wish Neil and his fiancée, Becks, all the very best for their wedding. They will be getting married in Cyprus.

“It was like a big reunion in Spain. There were 20 of us. For me there was time to reflect out there. I would particularly like to thank my friends David Cunnah, Mark Simons and Dave Simons for all their help to me during the trip.”

Mr Poole said among the fun, there was even time for everyone to get together for a group photograph in the Spanish sunshine gathered around a Wrexham FC beach towel.

Mr Poole has had to get used to life with one working eye after the devastating news in April that sight in his right eye could not be salvaged.

“I am finding ways to cope with it and I have developed a lot more confidence now than I had initially,” he added.

Mr Poole does not remember how the accident happened at Gwersyllt Railway Station.

“For me the most important thing is the incredible support I have received and I am positive about the future,” he added.
