UNION members at an aerospace factory near Wrexham are set for strike action, beginning as early as Saturday.

Staff at Magellan Aerospace, on Rackery Lane, Llay Industrial Estate, will walk out on three separate occasions over the coming month after failing to agree an adequate pay offer with company bosses.

Yesterday, bosses at Magellan and Unite were locked in discussions over a figure for the pay rise in a late bid to stave off the strikes.

In May, Unite announced 92 per cent of workers at the factory, which employs around 200 staff, had voted to strike, and the action will be in the form of a ban on overtime commencing at 7am on Saturday, July 12.

They will then take part in discontinuous industrial action on Thursday, July 17, striking for 48 hours from 7am. The action will end at 7am on Saturday, July 19.

Strikes of the same length will take place in the following two weeks, beginning at 7am on July 24 and 31.

In the latest union ballot, 181 employees voted to reject the latest pay offer from the company, while 13 workers voted to accept it.

The company has a contract to supply component parts to Broughton-based wing-makers Airbus UK.

Peter Hughes, Unite’s deputy regional secretary, confirmed that the strike action would begin with the ban on overtime on Saturday, unless a compromise could be reached in the form of an improved offer over the coming days.

Are we allowed to know what the pay offer was? I bet it was more than 1%? Does anyone know what pay increase percentages the private sector are getting at the moment?
