AN INSPIRATIONAL advice leaflet containing words from a tragic Bersham cancer victim will reach nearly 8,000 more cancer patients thanks to a charity golf day.

Megan Fletcher, 21, of Bersham, died after a 16-month battle with refractory Hodgkin’s lymphoma in May 2010. She died in her mother Fiona’s arms

As part of her brave fight, the Plymouth University student wrote empowering words of advice to people going through the same experience as her, urging them to remain positive and retain their sense of identity while undergoing treatment.

Megan’s words were later used by her proud mum Fiona, of Wern in Bersham, in a leaflet called My Name Is Not Cancer (MNINC).

The publication has already been distributed to thousands of patients in hospitals and GP surgeries at home and abroad, including parts of the Middle East, Europe, USA and New Zealand.

Now, thanks to the golf day organised by Ellis and Co Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers based in Wrexham and Chester the leaflet is set to have an even broader impact.

The event at Sutton Weaver Golf Course in Cheshire attracted 30 companies.

A prize draw was held raising £140 for MNINC.

Robert Ellis, the principal accountant at Ellis and Co, topped up the amount raised with a £250 donation and Barclays Bank match funded both donations, bringing the total to £780.

With each leaflet costing 10p, the fundraiser will make a massive difference, helping to distribute 7,800 to health organisations.

Delighted Fiona said: “We are thrilled that Ellis and Co and Barclays have collaborated in this way to support our organisation. We are continuing to empower thousands of patients as they go through their journey with cancer and donations like this really do make a tremendous difference.

“We help people to sustain positivity in what appears to be a hopeless situation by focusing on the MNINC motto which is “you stand out – your illness doesn’t”.

Fiona runs the MNINC organisation from her Bersham home.

The not-for-profit group has an active online presence on social media, as well as being available at www. mynameisnotcancer.com.

Mr Ellis said: “We are very keen to support MNINC in as many ways as we can as Megan’s story is so inspirational and incredibly moving that it’s important that we all do our bit to help.

“We all know someone touched by cancer and Megan’s message of hope and positivity is so vital in giving families the strength and empowerment they need during such a difficult time.”

Philip Cawley, Barclays business manager, added: “As soon as we heard about MNINC through Ellis and Co we wanted to do our bit to support such a fantastic cause.

“We are really pleased that our donation will help keep Megan’s messages of hope alive through the publication of thousands more leaflets.”
