CCTV camera vandal caught by footage

A TEENAGER who damaged a CCTV camera three times was caught out by footage taken from it.

The 17 year-old attacked the safety camera at Johnstown Sports Pavilion out of boredom, Wrexham youth court heard.

As he was sentenced, the youth was urged by magistrates to steer well clear of the location in future.

Helen Hall, prosecuting, said a maintenance worker at the sports pavilion first noticed one of the CCTV cameras missing on April 23.

She said: “He saw damage to a fascia board with a hole in it and found the smashed camera abandoned next to a bin.

“He went on to check the CCTV system and it had captured the footage of the defendant attacking the camera earlier in the day.”

The court heard that a similar offence occurred four days later on April 27 and then a month later on May 26, when the same maintenance worker saw the smashed plastic dome cover of a CCTV camera.

Footage again showed the same young male attacking it, this time with a cigarette lighter.

PCSO Piers Warburton identified the youngster from the CCTV images, which led to the teenager admitting the offences.

Ceri Evans, defending, said that the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has struggled to find employment and that had been a contributing factor.

She said: “It’s an area in which youths congregate. He was silly to commit these offences as he was quite literally caught out on CCTV.

“It was a case of boredom from his point of view.

“He is looking for work but there are no jobs for him, not helped by his previous record. He attends the job centre all the time but with no money he just hangs around. It was a really foolish thing to do.”

Magistrate Lady Sally Kenyon handed him a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £400 in compensation.

She said: “It was a really silly thing to do. We urge you to stay away from Johnstown Sports Pavilion. Go play somewhere else.”
