A MUM says a bike helmet has saved her son’s life after he was hurt in an horrific accident.
Rachel Heron has relived the traumatic moment her son was was knocked off his bike on Friday night.
She said 11-year-old Deon is lucky to be alive.
Deon suffered severe concussion and had 12 X-rays and a brain scan.
He is now back at home, nursing his wounds.
Miss Heron, of Brunswick Road, Buckley, said if her son had not been wearing a helmet, “it could have been a very different story”.
She described her agonising journey to a neighbouring street to learn the extent of the youngster’s injuries after he collided with a vehicle at about 7pm near Princess Avenue and Nant Mawr Road in Buckley.
Miss Heron, 32, said when she arrived at the scene she was confronted with her son lying in the road screaming in pain.
“I was at home and I had some guy knocking on my door and a taxi driver came to the house and gave me a lift to where it happened,” said Miss Heron, 32.
“I was in complete shock.
“I didn’t know what state he was going to be in and, when I got there no one couldn’t tell me anything.
“There was a lady who stayed there and lay with him until the ambulance came.”
Miss Heron added: “I thought he was seriously injured at the time.
“He was screaming, agitated and very scared.
“He couldn’t say what was wrong with him.
“It was horrible.”
Deon was rushed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital where he stayed overnight.
He returned home the following day but Miss Heron said she had to take him back for a second-night’s stay in hospital due to the youngster suffering severe concussion.
He underwent 12 X-rays and a CT scan.
Miss Heron believes Deon could have died had he not been wearing a helmet – which was left smashed due to the force of the impact.
“It was so important that he was wearing a helmet. I think it saved his life,” she said.
“It has been a horrific weekend.
“It all hit me last night.
“I cried at the scene but I bawled my eyes out last night after I put him to bed.
“It really could have been a whole lot worse.”
Police are investigating the collision and have asked anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting the reference number R093085.
