A YOUNG motorcyclist will take to the track at one of the UK’s leading circuits.

Dan Jones, 12, will line up against young riders from across Europe at Brands Hatch in Kent at the next stage of the Moriwaki Cup.

Dan, from Mold, a pupil at Ysgol Maes Garmon, is competing in the fourth stage of the motor sport competition that pits racers aged between 12 and 22 against each other over seven stages.

The event is taking place alongside the World Superbikes Championship, which is being held at the track on the same weekend, July 18-20.

Competition has been mixed so far for the 12-year-old British Mini Moto champion with a variety of factors, including an oily track, delayed qualifying and awful weather conditions making the second stage in Assen, Netherlands, one to forget.

His dad Steve, said: “All this meant track time was shortened and with a damp evening track, the conditions were a nightmare for Dan and he did not finish.”

Things improved for the young rider when the teams moved to Oschersleben, Germany, with Dan securing a 16th place in his first race and 14th in his second.

“Unfortunately qualifying was disappointing,” said Dan.

“We had a faulty tyre valve which meant I was riding on an almost flat tyre.”

His dad Steve, added: “Once we had fixed the tyre problem, Dan was able to make good ground, increasing his lap time by 10 seconds. We had much better track time than at Assen so Dan was much better prepared in his races.

“We aim to get a practise bike for Dan as the other competitors have them and it just gives them the edge.

“We are extremely proud of the effort that Dan puts in and think our ambition of a top ten finish in the next round is achievable.”
