POLICE on the lookout for a possible drink-driver stopped his car and found he was three times the legal alcohol limit.

Lee Williams, 41, was banned from driving for four years after a court heard it was his second conviction.

Williams, of Emlyn Cottages, Bagillt, was placed on a 12-month community order and must carry out 120 hours’ unpaid work.

He was also sent on a drink impaired drivers’ course run by the probation service.

Appearing at Flintshire Magistrates Court he admitted driving with 242 miligrammes of alcohol in his blood, compared with the legal limit of 80, but his solicitor said he believed that his drink might have been spiked.

He also admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance and was fined £200 with £105 costs.

Magistrates told him that they believed that he needed urgent medical help.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said at just after midnight on April 19 police received information from CCTV camera operators in Holywell town centre that three men had driven off in a vehicle and the driver was suspected of being intoxicated.

A search was started and police went out to the home of the vehicle’s registered keeper in Higher Kinnerton, where they saw the car.

Williams was slurring his words and when requested to take a breath test he provided insufficient breath.

“He was not trying,” said Mr Espie.

Williams said he was asthmatic, so blood was taken instead, giving the 242 miligrammes of alcohol reading.

Gary Harvey, defending, said Williams was working seven days a week for a local firm and he would find it difficult without a driving licence, but accepted he would receive a ban.
