Holywell brothers follow in their hero's footsteps

SINGING siblings Richard and Adam said they are privileged to be following in the footsteps of operatic superstar Luciano Pavarotti.

The Johnson brothers, from Holywell, have been invited to perform at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, where the famous Italian tenor performed in the early years of his career.

The classical and opera singing duo, who finished third in last year’s Britain's Got Talent competition and used to work making sandwiches in Holywell, will take to the stage during the showpiece Choir of the World competition that brings the renowned Llangollen festival to a close.

And they have described the chance to emulate their hero’s appearance on the famous stage as another “Impossible Dream” coming true.

Richard said: “To follow in the footsteps of someone like Pavarotti is a bit humbling to be perfectly honest.

“It will be our first time at the International Eisteddfod and we are both really excited.

“It’s a truly iconic venue and the festival itself has so much history.”

Richard and Adam's debut album, Impossible Dream, stayed at the top of the mainstream UK charts for four weeks and a follow-up Christmas album sold an amazing 90,000 copies.

A third album, Richard and Adam: At the Movies, is due out in August.

Pavarotti first performed at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 1955 as part of male voice choir Corale Rossini, which won first prize.

He returned to give a solo performance at a sell-out concert 40 years later in 1995.

“We really are privileged to have been given the chance to perform during the Choir of the World competition,” Richard added.

“What we want is to continue being successful and having more and more opportunities to perform on the biggest stages.

“Let's be frank, there’s no bigger stage than the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.”

Musical director Eilir Owen Griffiths described the Choir of the World competition is one of the foremost choral competitions in the international calendar.

“I’m delighted Richard and Adam have agreed to perform during the evening,” he said.

“Their success, both in terms of live performances and their recording success, since appearing on Britain’s Got Talent has been incredible and I’m delighted to be able to welcome two performers who hail from neighbouring Flintshire to the Llangollen stage.

“The competition is fierce and the standard is extraordinarily high.”

The curtain raiser for this year’s eisteddfod on July 7 will mark the return of another opera superstar, Bryn Terfel, to Llangollen.

The acclaimed bass baritone will play the lead in a special English-language production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

He will be joined by fellow tenor Wynne Evans, best known as Gio Compario in the Go Compare television adverts.
