A KNIGHTED former North Wales Police chief has died.

Sir Philip Myers OBE QPM was the first chief constable of North Wales Police, before going on to a top role with Her Majesty’s Inpsectorate of Constabulary in Nothern Ireland.

He died on Saturday night, aged 83.

He had been suffering with illness for some time.

Sir Philip was brought up in the Wrexham area and lived in Rossett before moving to Old Colwyn, Conwy, where he lived with wife Lady Hazel.

He was said to be among the most popular chief constables in North Wales and was revered by his fellow officers.

He retired in 1982 to become one of HM Inspectors of Constabulary and was succeeded by David Owen.

Conwy county councillor Phil Edwards worked as secretary of the North Wales Police Federation until he retired in 2002.

He is also vice president of Colwyn Male Voice Choir, where Sir Philip was president.

Speaking to the Leader last night he said: “He appointed me to the police when I first went in.

“We knew each other until we retired and after we both retired we remained good friends.

“I was very saddened to hear the news this morning that he had passed away last night.

“He was a kind, gentle, thoughtful human being and was much loved by his family.

“Even in his last few months and years he was as sharp minded as he ever was and had a sharp sense of humour.”
