A NEW surgery will allow a doctors’ practice to accommodate more patients, it is hoped.

Professor Mike Pringle, president of The Royal College of GPs, officially opened the new GP surgery at Chapel House, High Street, Bangor-on-Dee, a branch of Overton Medical Practice.

Paul Myres, chairman of The Royal College of GPs in Wales, also gave a speech.

Also in attendance were doctors and staff from the practice, members of the community and representatives from the practice’s patient participation group.

One of the patients, Joan Deverell, helped with the design of the surgery.

Practice manager James Eastop said: “It is a new branch of an existing surgery which for many years had been located in a building that was becoming unfit for purpose.

“We were really honoured to have Prof Pringle here for the opening.

“It was quite prestigious to have him take time out to emphasise the need for a rural practice. The old building was dank and dark, but this new premises is much more viable and nicely-located.

“We are thankful for an improvement grant from the Welsh Government, NHS Estates and help from the patients participation group.

“It has taken us five years, it’s been a long road to get where we are, but we are now able to spend more money on re-equipping the practice with new equipment.”

Mr Eastop said the new premises was vital with the practice rapidly expanding.

He said: “We have grown quite dramatically in recent years, more than 20 per cent since 2006, and hope to continue taking on more patients.

“We have broadened our catchment area from the edge of Wrexham, to Whitchurch and into Shropshire.

“More patients will mean more income and this will be reinvested back into the practice.

“It is good that the partners have taken a medium-term view in what tends to be a short-term business.

“They wanted to improve the ability to attract patients and provide a better quality service.

“Overall, we are very pleased, very proud and would like to thank the whole of the local community for their support.”
