THIEVES who stole materials and vandalised facilities at a football club have been slammed as being “mindless”.

Saltney Town FC, who were formed five years ago, were targeted overnight on Tuesday when thieves forced entry into a cabin being converted into changing rooms.

Building materials, paint and tools were all taken in the raid while
windows were smashed and paint daubed on the walls, seating and floor of the newly-carpeted cabin.

Many of the materials taken had been donated to the cash-strapped club as it continues to establish itself in the community.

Team manager Mike Cunningham said he has been left “deeply disappointed” by the raid, while club secretary Marc Edwards described the act as “heartbreaking”.

“I am deeply disappointed because a lot of hard work has been put in there,” Mr Cunningham said.

“We are in the process of converting the cabin to changing rooms as they have to be closer to the pitch.

“Locks, ironmongery, hinges and paint have all been stolen. Much of what we had was donated.”

Mr Cunningham said the club has already outlayed £30,000 on getting water, gas, electricity and waste facilities routed to the club cabin on Sandy Lane.
Now much of the hard work has been undermined.

Mr Edwards, who had been working on the improvements at the cabin hours before the break-in, said: “It is heartbreaking to think someone would choose to do such a thing.

“There were very few items of value in there and the damage that they have carried out inside was mindless.

“Our players have worked tirelessly over the past three weeks, stripping out and building the interior walls and this will do nothing but leave us with even more work to do.”

The fact the work was being carried out voluntarily has made the incident even harder to bear, Mr Edwards said.

A North Wales Police spokesman confirmed the door to the cabin had been kicked in by the thieves between 8pm on Tuesday and 1.30pm on Wednesday.

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting reference number R087304, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
