A DRINKER who attacked a stranger at a Deeside pub has been banned from all public houses in the county.

Kristian Ashley Bather, 23, of Bron y Wern, Bagillt, admitted assaulting Kieron Smith at The Castle in Brook Road, Shotton.

Matthew Ellis, prosecuting, said that it was an unprovoked attack on a stranger.

District Judge Gwyn Jones, sitting at Flintshire Magistrates Court, gave Bather a 150-day prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He received supervision, was ordered to carry out 150 hours’ unpaid work in the community, with £500 compensation to the complainant and £80 compensation to North Wales Police after he admitted damaging a police car.

The judge ordered him to pay £165  costs and said that he would make a 12-month exclusion order from all public houses in Flintshire.

Judge Jones said that it had been “an extremely unpleasant incident” which caused a significant injury.

Immediate custody was justified and Bather had sensibly brought a bag with him to court.

It was on licensed premises in the early hours of February 8 and he caused significant fear.

But he had the good sense to plead guilty at an early stage, he was in employment, and he was ordinarily a family man.

He had therefore drawn back from a custodial sentence.
