Concern expressed over Connah's Quay booze licence plan

NEARLY 200 residents have expressed their concerns over an application to extend a hotel’s alcohol licence.

The application was for The Albion Hotel, Connah’s Quay.

Currently the venue can serve alcohol between 11am and 11pm Monday to Saturday, but the management wants to extend the hours to between 10am and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The applicant originally wanted to open the premises until 2am every night of the week, but after talks with the police he agreed the current hours for Monday to Thursday would remain.

However, even the scaled back application has been met with anger and concern.

A 180-name petition against the extension was submitted after the plans were originally advertised, as well as eight letters of objection from residents in the area.

The proposal will be discussed at a meeting of Flintshire Council’s licensing committee tomorrow.

It is proposed the hotel would be able to serve alcohol and provide indoor sporting events such as boxing or wrestling, entertainment, live music, recorded music and dancing.

Resident Morfydd Auty, who wrote a letter opposing the plan, said: “If the application is successful, the lives of the surrounding families and neighbours would be destroyed by loud noise, anti-social behaviour and other rowdiness.

“We are a residential area with mainly older residents and families who already have problems from the club.

“I have lived here for more than 40 years and the mere thought of this application being granted makes me feel very upset and quite worried.”

A letter from Philip and Diane Edwards said: “We’ve had people shouting, arguing and fighting after leaving the club.

“On several occasions the police have been called to fights. One person was stabbed outside our house.”

In recent months the business has not been operating and on April 16 an application was made to transfer the premises licence to Saxon Leisure (NW) Ltd from the previous holder James Bedden.

The Penyllan Tenants’ and Residents’ Association is also opposed to the plan.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Cllr Gill Faulkner said: “In the past residents who live near the club have experienced lots of anti-social behaviour [such as] loud music into the early hours, fighting outside the car park, beer bottles all around the area, swearing and shouting.

“The police were called on a regular basis and last year there was an incident which involved gangs fighting and one of them had a knife.

“I live about 500 yards from the Albion and nearly every night my family were disturbed in the early hours of the morning by shouting, screaming and fighting from customers who had too much to drink.

“The next morning we would find vomit on the path and broken beer bottles on the street.”

Speaking about the petition, council officer Michael Lovatt said: “This indicates a level of concern in the locality but petitions are not regarded as relevant representations in the context of the Licensing Act because there is insufficient detail of individual resident’s views.”

The applicant agreed to admit no new customers after midnight, and that the police must be notified within a reasonable time of any boxing, wrestling, or cage fighting events to be held at the premises.
