Angry residents ready for battle to halt bank closure

ANGRY residents and councillors have launched an appeal to save an under-threat village bank.

The Rhos branch of NatWest is to be closed by the Royal Bank of Scotland on September 1, under proposals revealed two weeks ago by the part tax-payer owned banking giant.

Community councillors and local politicians have launch a series of scathing attacks on RBS since the decision.

And the flames were fuelled last week when the group revealed more money would be invested in the Chester branch, despite the closure over the border in Rhos.

Now a petition has been launched online and in print in an attempt to mobilise the people of Rhos in their attempts to save the branch, which will lead to two job losses for the branch’s current staff.

The petition was launched on Friday.

As of yesterday 84 people had signed the online version.

Ponciau councillor Paul Pemberton, who has accused RBS of “racism” for closing the Welsh village branch while investing over the border in Chester, said he was “up for a fight” with the banking firm.

“We’ve fought off closures of the library, the Stiwt Theatre and we’ve taken on our community facilities, so we’re certainly up for a fight when it comes to things like this in the region,” he said.

“I’ll fight tooth and nail to save this branch in Rhos, otherwise it will be another nail in the coffin for our village.”

One of the reasons for closure according to RBS is a lack of footfall at the branch, with a drastic reduction in numbers since 2011.

But Rhos Community Council chairman, Cllr Kevin Hughes, said: “I go to the bank regularly and if you are there for 15 to 20 minutes, you will see at least a dozen people come through the doors. It is a very busy little bank and a vital asset to our
village.

“It’ll be a terrible shame if it is lost and the way RBS have gone about this is wrong.”
