HUNDREDS of people lined the streets to witness the annual Broughton and Bretton Carnival.

Spectators lined up to enjoy a fairground, stalls, tug-of-war competitions and sideshows as a parade took to the streets and the Brookes Avenue playing field involving floats and dance troops.

The carnival suffered a gap of 20 years before hardworking volunteers brought it back to life three years ago.

The colourful event on Saturday was in full swing as live music helped ignite the carnival atmosphere at the village extravaganza.

The popular event began at noon under rainy skies when the parade set off from Broughton Primary School and wound its way towards the community centre.

The carnival queen was then crowned by Alex Lewis, community champion at Broughton’s Tesco store.

A number of changes were made to the community centre in preparation for the carnival, with donations coming in from both Airbus and the Millennium Trust to develop the site's toilets, while the kitchen has also been upgraded.

Speaking following Saturday's fun-filled event, organiser Ellen Jones said: “It was grey and rainy to begin with but we soldiered on and by the afternoon the sun was out.

“We had almost 1,000 people lining the streets which considering the weather was a brilliant turnout and shows the community spirit here.

“The people of Broughton and Bretton always support this event and this year it was no different.

“Our carnival is always well received and it has been successful since we brought it back and it’s good to see the villages come together. We raised enough money to buy new windows for the community centre and I would like to say a big thank you to all the committee members on a job well done.”
