Connah's Quay boy on road to recovery after quad bike horror

A TEENAGER who nearly died in a quad bike crash has had an operation to rebuild his skull.

Ryan Redfearn, of Telford Court, Connah’s Quay, was left fighting for his life after he came off the bike on a footpath near John Summers High School in Queesferry nine months ago.

The 16-year-old spent three weeks in intensive care and had to have a quarter of his skull removed to release pressure on his brain.

Since then he has had three operations and now surgeons at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital have reconstructed his skull – meaning Ryan, 16, no longer has the large dent in his head and giving him a new lease of life.

His mother Jo Law, who said she feared for her son’s life after the crash last August, described his recovery as nothing short of a miracle.

“After what he went through he is lucky to be alive,” she said. “When the accident happened it was touch and go and since then we have been waiting for this operation date to come through.

“Ryan had to wear a helmet before the operation because the slightest knock to his head could have been fatal.”

Jo added: “They have done an amazing job at Alder Hey.”

Ryan, who is hoping to return to Coleg Cambria in Deeside to undertake a motoring course, has been left with a scar “from one ear to the other” and 60 staples in his head – which are due to be taken out today.

At the time of the accident, Jo, who has three other children, said she was planning to return home from hospital for a change of clothes, but doctors advised her not to leave the hospital with fears Ryan may take a turn for the worse.

She went on to praise the doctors and nurses, describing them as “amazing” and said she had been overwhelmed by all the messages of support Ryan and the family had received via Facebook.

Ryan told the Leader last September the collision was a complete blackout.

He had to have two operations, one for a broken femur in his right leg and one on his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.
