A car park has been transformed into a play area after a decade of lying disused.

Children will now be able to play and learn in the new area in Ty Mawr Country Park
Youngsters, some of whom played a part in shaping how the new park looks, will also be able to learn about farm animals and insects thanks to the area’s wildlife play props.

Pupils from the schools who helped in the planning process of the project were on hand to see the playground opened by Wrexham Mayor Cllr T Alan Edwards.

The area features artwork, games such as hopscotch and ‘guess the animal’, plus scenes of farm animals and trees showing insects.

It is hoped the opportunity to play games and learn at the same time will encourage children and their parents to visit the park on a regular basis.

Ty Mawr Country Park information assistant Lindsay Mills said: “It’s a great use of the old car park, which hasn’t been used for about 10 years, except for tractors that have used it to turn around in.”

The money for the project was raised by Friends of Ty Mawr through fundraising, grants and donations.

Two local schools, Min y Ddol Primary School and Cefn Mawr Primary School, have been involved in putting ideas forward for the playground and their students had the chance to see them come to life at the opening.

Mrs Mills added: “The children had workshops with the artist Marcia Crocombe, and presented her with drawings of what they would like to see. Afterwards, she drew them onto the back area of the playground.

“The Mayor and Mayoress were in attendance and gave a lovely speech and the children enjoyed taking the opportunity to be the first ones to play there.

“We’re very happy at how it has turned out; it’s so beautiful and pretty.

“We are always busy, especially during the summer and there will be a number of events which will hopefully keep people visiting on a regular basis.”
