A FATHER-OF-TWO diagnosed with a rare eye condition is perform a gruelling hiking challenge.

Stephen Dallas, of Mill Lane, Buckley, is to take on the Three Peaks challenge – hiking three of the UK’s highest mountains in 24 hours – to raise money for charity OcuMel UK, which represents people affected by ocular melanoma.

Mr Dallas, 41, was diagnosed with the rare eye cancer after visiting his optician for a routine check-up a year ago.

Ocular melanoma is the most common type and aggressive form of cancer affecting the eye – but it is still relatively rare.

It can spread to other organs, typically the liver.

Ahead of the challenge, which begins today, Mr Dallas said he was looking forward to taking it on.

He said: “I’m a little bit nervous but we should be okay. I’ve done lots of walking to prepare and we’ve carried on training.

“I’ve never done this before and I’m quite excited about going up there. I’m prepared.”

Mr Dallas, who works as a robot programmer at Witter Towbars on Deeside Industrial Park, will be joined going up Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike by friends Pete Morris, 42, and Paul Hughes, 40, both of Buckley.

He said he was keen to raise as much money as possible for chosen charity, OcuMel UK, which has supported him and his family since his diagnosis.

“OcuMel put us in touch with other cancer sufferers and have kept us up to date with any information,” he said. “They also put on a support group my wife Jo has been heavily involved with. This form of eye cancer is such a rare thing it’s only now starting to get noticed. We’re trying to raise as much money and awareness as we can.”
