Mains burst affects thousands of homes in Wrexham and Chester

A MAJOR water main burst caused disruption for thousands of homes in the Wrexham and Chester area.

A spokesman for Dee Valley Water said about 3,600 properties were affected at locations which included Rossett, Lavister, Pulford, Dodleston, Eccleston, Holt, Farndon, Churton, Common Wood, Poulton and Aldford yesterday.

Some customers had no supply at all while others experienced low pressure and also discoloured water.

Farndon Primary School initially decided not to open, because it is a legal requirement to have a water supply.

However shortly after that decision was made, the water came on and the school day was able to go ahead.

Head teacher Andrew Walker said a text was sent out to parents telling them about the closure at 8am.

Mr Walker diligently kept checking the taps and at about 8.20am the supply was back on.

A further text was quickly sent out informing families the school was open and a message also placed on the website.

“We had phoned up Dee Valley Water to ask what the situation was and got through to a recorded message,” said Mr Walker.

“We had to make a decision about not opening as soon as possible to be able to inform parents.”

A spokesman for Dee Valley Water said the burst took place in the Holt area.
Repair work involved getting to a field which had two bulls in it.

A farmer had to be contacted to secure the livestock before engineers were able to gain access.

The spokesman said: “All affected properties were back on supply by about 9am after alternative supplies were deployed to try to minimise the disruption while the repair was being carried out.

“Once the supply has been restored to normal, people may experience some discolouration to their water supply.

“Customers in the Gresford and Marford area may also experience discolouration as a result and we would therefore ask them to run the kitchen cold water tap until the supply clears and refrain from using the supply for any water appliances during this time.”

The spokesman said residents could be assured that, although the discolouration may look unpleasant, the supply remained disinfected and was not harmful to human health.

Chief executive David Strahan said: “I apologise to our customers in the affected areas for any inconvenience caused by this incident and thank them for their co-operation and patience while we made every effort to restore supplies to normal as quickly as possible.”

George Hughes of Castle Street in Holt said: “I received a text about the water supply problem on Wednesday morning from Dee Valley Water.

“I ran discoloured water off and gave it to my plants. I’m not going to waste it because I’m on a water meter. There has been no drop in pressure.”

Michelle Cupit of Wrexham Road in Holt said: “At 6.20am, I saw there was low pressure and dirty water.

“The pressure improved a bit a few hours after that and was back to normal by about 11.30am – but the water was still dirty.

“ It was inconvenient because it meant I couldn’t do any clothes washing.”
