A WREXHAM man has become an overnight sensation after taking his first selfie – at the grand old age of 102.
Technology-loving centenarian Pryce Davies, of Berse Road, Caego, took his first-ever selfie with the help of care support worker Naomi Walker.
Days after the snap was posted on social networking websites, Mr Davies’ selfie was picked up by weekend entertainment show Sunday Brunch.
The Channel 4 show, hosted by former Soccer AM presenter Tim Lovejoy and TV chef Simon Rimmer, then featured the snap on the show, meaning millions of viewers shared the veteran’s first selfie.
Mrs Walker, who works for Homecare Matters in Pentre Broughton, Wrexham, took the photo so she could upload it to Facebook and Twitter and show Mr Davies his photograph online.
Mr Davies, who turns 103 next month, was “amazed” to see himself on TV.
Mrs Walker said: “He has got a fantastic attitude to everything – he’s so inspirational and full of life.
“He loves technology and I was showing him what his phone can do.
“I said ‘let’s take your first selfie’ and put it online so he could see it on the computer.
“He was amazed to see himself on the screen.
“When he saw himself on TV he shook his head and said ‘I look old’.
“He is loving the attention he has got from it – he wants to be an overnight sensation.”
Mr Davies, who was landlord at the Moors Inn, in Bwlchgwyn, for 50 years, said: “It was a lovely sunny day, the best day we’ve had for a while, it seemed like something fun to do.
“I had my hat on and was laughing when Naomi said ‘let’s have your first selfie’.
“I’d never taken a selfie before and did not really know what they were. It’s very clever.
“I’ve loved seeing the pictures everywhere and have had a laugh about becoming an internet sensation.”
On the picture appearing on Sunday Brunch, Mr Davies said: “I saw it on television and my first thought was ‘oh, don’t I look old’.” It is believed Mr Davies is a contender for being the oldest person to have ever taken a selfie.
“I’m the oldest person to have done it as far as I know, maybe I should get a medal for it,” he joked.
