A CORONER described the case of a woman found hanged in her home as “tragic”.

Jean Maureen Higginson was found hanging in a summerhouse at her home on Hawthorne View, Sealand, on January 9.

A coroner’s inquest conducted at County Hall in Ruthin heard she had been discovered by neighbours, who had become concerned for her welfare after she had not responded to repeated text messages or calls.

Her husband Graham Stanley Higginson was found hanged in 2006, and she had gone through depressive episodes after losing her daughter in 1989.

One of her grandsons had also taken his own life in 2007.

The 65-year-old, originally from Chester, had worked at a stockroom at the Boots warehouse for 23 years, until being made redundant four years ago.

Her son Mark Edward Higginson attended the inquest yesterday.

In his statement he said: “I did feel that mum had a lot of grief with the family. But she hid things very well.

“I miss and love my mum so much.”

A statement from PC Martin Brennan, of North Wales Police, who attended at Mrs Higginson’s home after her death, said she had also left a note to her family.

A post-mortem examination undertaken by Dr Andrew Dalton of Glan Clwyd Hospital added there was evidence Mrs Higginson tried to abort the suicide attempt.

A quantity of 129 milligrams of alcohol had been found per 100 mililitres of her blood.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales East and Central, returned an open conclusion. He said while there was evidence she had intended to take her own life, elements of the post mortem report suggested that she had not intended to do so throughout the act.

As such, he could not return a conclusion of suicide.

Mr Gittins added to Mr Higginson: “Your mum was troubled, but the truth is that she is now no longer troubled.

“Regardless of that, you have my very sincerest sympathies.

“You lost your mum, in a tragic set of circumstances.”
