A DISQUALIFIED driver sped away from police because he had been drinking.

Nicholas Bagnall, 30, was jailed for 16 weeks and banned from driving for five years following the incident on Saturday.

Bagnall, of Hamlington Avenue, Wrexham, admitted drink-driving.

He had a reading more than three times the legal limit – 117 microgrammes compared to the legal limit of 35.

He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, aggravated vehicle taking and failing to stop for the police.

Bagnall also admitted stealing £60 worth of fuel from a garage at Coedpoeth.

Flintshire Magistrates Court at Mold heard police chased Bagnall along country lanes in the Coedpoeth area. They eventually forced the vehicle off the road.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said police received a number of calls from the public in

the Wrexham and Brymbo areas about the erratic driving of a Peugeot 206.

Police later received a report that the car had collided with a bridge at Cefn y Bedd before driving off.

Officers saw him on a minor lane near Coedpoeth and despite blue lights and sirens he sped off.

An attempted “tactical stop” – where the police collided with the rear of the car to stop it – failed.

But officers were later able to get alongside the car and force it up a nearby embankment.

The car, which belonged to Bagnall’s partner, was damaged to the tune of £1,200.
