A MAN dressed only in his underpants chased after a burglar in the early hours of the morning.

After he lost him he got dressed and went out in his car looking for him with other members of his family before finally cornering the burglar, Mold Crown Court heard yesterday.

Darren Kydd, 44, of Strand Villas, Bagillt, admitted burglary. He also appeared for sentence for an assault against his former partner and for breaching a suspended sentence.

Owen Edwards, prosecuting, said in April last year Darren Jones, his partner Claire Hill and their young children were all in bed at their Bagillt home when Mr Jones got up to investigate a noise.

When he saw Kydd near his home he shouted at him and he ran off.

Mr Jones, still in his underwear, pursued him while his partner had discovered her purse was missing.

When he got his car out to continue the search Mr Jones spotted Kydd heading towards Holywell.

He called some family members and they all managed to catch up with Kydd and challenge him.

Kydd had £85 with him which was the same amount stolen from Ms Hill’s purse.

She retraced the route Kydd had taken and discovered her purse in a bin.

Police arrested Kydd later that morning. Ms Hill said the break-in had led her to become quite “paranoid” and she was upset the burglary had been committed by someone who lived locally.

Kydd had received a suspended sentence and restraining order in relation to an offence against a former partner.

He had also been guilty of common assault against her when he had held a knife against her throat during a jealous rage.

Judge Niclas Parry, commenting on Kydd’s record, said: “A quarter of a century of offences and still at it.

“This was a serious burglary, at night, in a house occupied by a very young family, with very young children.

“You have left this family in a state of continued concern and alarm.

“On bail, and in breach of sentence, you carried out a very serious common assault in a domestic setting involving putting a knife to a victim’s throat.”

He sentenced Kydd to two years for burglary, six months for common assault and activated six months of the suspended sentence, all to run consecutively, a total of three years in prison.
