WITNESSES to the horrifying aftermath of a road accident that claimed the lives of two motorcyclists say they will never forget the “war-like” scene.

People rushed to help as flames shot into the air following a reported explosion in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s accident.

They relayed blankets, drinks and fire extinguishers as they tried to help the victims.

Sheila Stewart, who runs Capricorn Animal Rescue at Padeswood just yards from where the crash occurred, said: “It was horrific, harrowing.

“We heard the most awful crash. Everyone just dropped everything and ran. We could see the flames through the trees. Then there was a massive explosion and the flames shot above the trees.

“It looked like a war scene. Bits of motorbikes were all over the road.”

Mrs Stewart was joined by other Capricorn volunteers and visitors to the rescue centre in running to help.

“I have lived here for 30 years and I have seen a lot of accidents on the road, but this is the worst,” she said.

“People went up with fire extinguishers. We were sending up trays of drinks, ‘hi vis’ jackets and blankets in relays.

“Everyone responded really well and we were trying to redirect traffic but a lot of people just ignored us.

“We invited people into the rescue centre to help them get away from what had happened.

“The memory of what we saw will stay with me and the other volunteers for a very, very long time.”

John Tattum, who lives in a house facing the crash site said: “Police blocked the road when I was trying to get home.

“I had to drive through the park land to my house and when I was going out again soon after, there was an air ambulance landing in the next field.

“Police and council workers were still outside dealing with it after 9pm.”
