A GROUP of young cheerleaders are celebrating after winning a county competition.

Flint High School’s year seven cheerleading team, Flint Rocks, were given the winners trophy at the Sport Flintshire Festival of Youth Sport.

The team performed in front of an audience of more than 400 primary and secondary school pupils at Deeside Leisure Centre earlier this month.

They had also developed their own ideas for the name and logo of the team and with the help of graphic designer, John Mainwaring of Jaffa Design and Joe Forrester of Forrester Sports, the new ‘Flint Rocks’ logo and kit were designed and agreed.

The cheerleading club at Flint High is part of the PE and 5 x 60 extra-curricular programme at the school which aims to get high school pupils taking part in an extra five hours per week of physical activity.

Bethan Roberts, the school’s 5 x 60 officer, said: “This is a brilliant result for the girls and well deserved.

“They train twice a week and have put in more than 50 hours which shows amazing dedication.

“They’ve also demonstrated impressive innovation skills by organising two cake sales at school to raise money for their new kits. I am very proud of them.”

The team, which is coached by year nine student Morgan-Lea King, will now be taking part in the National Schools Competition being held at the Manchester Velodrome next month.
