A MAN has been sentenced after he threatened to burn down a community-run pub after attending a family christening.

Gareth Camm, of Bryn Hedd, Southsea, was drunk and in the process of leaving the Tyn y Capel in Minera when he shouted to the landlord he would “torch this place down”.

The 45-year-old also threatened to ‘punch a hole in the head’ of landlord, David Smallman, in the incident on Sunday, May 4, after the defendant had become drunk and aggressive following a christening.

Appearing at Wrexham Magistrates Court, he admitted the charge of threatening and abusive behaviour and was said to be “mortified” by his actions.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, told the court Camm attended the christening before heading to the pub in Minera, where he began drinking at about noon.

His behaviour changed and he became aggressive towards Mr Smallman, who told him to calm down. Mr Smallman went to the cellar to change a barrel but on his return to the bar, he saw Camm became more abusive and threatening to “punch holes” in his head.

At this point others in the pub were described as being “frightened” and “visibly upset”.

The defendant decided to leave , but before he did he shouted: “I will torch this place down”.

He was arrested by police and shown CCTV of the incident, at which point he admitted to the offences.

Amy Phoenix, defending, said Camm had recently married his partner of 11 years and was enjoying the family occasion before the offence took place.

She told the court Camm was a self-employed window cleaner in the local area and he was mortified by what took place.

She said Camm conceded he drank too much on the day and had no relevant recent convictions.

He was handed a 12-month conditional discharge, a £110 fine, and banned from entering the Tyn y Capel for 12 months.

Summing up, District Judge Gwyn Jones said: “It is quite clear that, having attended this family gathering, you drank more than was good for you. You caused a great deal of upset amongst family members, members of the public and pub staff. You did not take heed of the landlord’s warning and carried on with your behaviour, not only frightening adults but also children.”
