A TEACHER was determined to lose weight for her wedding day and in a year shed nearly five stone.
Gemma Durcan-Smith, 26, of Saltney, set herself a goal of one year to slim down before marrying Alex, 28, with the support of mother Karan and sister Kassy.
The trio joined a WeightWatchers group in Saltney. At Mrs Durcan-Smith’s first weigh in she was 14st 3lbs.
“The first meeting was nerve-wracking, I knew I was overweight but hadn't weighed myself in a long time,” she said.
Despite her initial worries, Mrs Durcan-Smith, an RE teacher at the the Catholic High School, Chester, reached her goal of 9st 13lbs – a drop of four stones 10 pounds – by last Christmas, months ahead of schedule.
She said: “The first few weeks were an adjustment but the weight came off steadily and I set mini targets monthly about weight, new recipes or exercise. I felt so much better about my holiday photos last summer when I was losing the weight and seeing how good my mum felt spurred me on for my goal. I had gains along the way but I always gave myself a time limit to get the gain weight off.”
Not content with her already impressive weight loss, Mrs Durcan-Smith set about shedding a further six pounds to reach a weight of 9st 7lbs just weeks before the big day.
She said her weight loss added to the joy of her wedding day.
“I loved every minute of our wedding day but putting on a size eight wedding dress that day was a great feeling,” she said. “I felt so beautiful all day and I wore my bikinis with pride on honeymoon.”
After her weight loss, Mrs Durcan-Smith ran the Delamere Forest 10k in under an hour.
She raised £125 for Cancer Research UK.
