BUDDING young entrepreneurs braved the wrath of their school 'Dragons' to showcase their business ideas.
Pupils at Barker’s Lane Community School, Wrexham, held a Dragons’ Den-style event for pupils in years five and six to test ideas for a game stall at the school’s summer fair.
Children worked in groups to design the Second World War-themed game. They had to work out the cost of prizes, how much to charge and how much profit it would have made by the end of the fair.
They pitched their ideas to the school’s Dragons – a team of business people who sit on the Barker’s Lane PTA. Members quizzed pupils on their business plans, before the children made adjustments to the games and bought their prizes.
After the fair, the group with the highest amount raised will work with the headteacher on how best to spend the money.
Morgan Churchill, 11, said: “We’ve enjoyed this project so much and it has been a good experience.
“The game we came up with is called Splat the Rat. We had to make a prototype of our game and then present our game to the PTA. We’ve asked the PTA for £20 – £10 for the stall space and £10 for prizes.”
Sophie Jones, 10, said: “It’s not about winning, it’s about learning about business.
The PTA can fire questions at anyone in the group, so we all have to know what our game is about.”
Jess Hughes, 10, said: “It’s work, but we’re having fun. People have been trying our game and so far it’s been very popular – teachers say it’s addictive.”
Michelle DeRosa, chairman of the school’s PTA, said the group had been “so impressed” by the presentations.
She added: “This is a great way for the children to learn about business and marketing and they have also had the opportunity to find out more about the Second World War. In many ways, they have also discovered games at fairs haven’t really changed over the years – ball games, target games and tombolas were popular then and remain so.”
Christine Harrison-Edwards, headteacher, said she was “extremely proud” of the hard work put in by pupils.
The school fair takes place on Friday, June 6, between 5pm and 7pm at the school.
